Emmen is a municipality in the Dutch province of Drenthe with almost 110,000 inhabitants. Emmen has the largest industrial estate in the northern Netherlands with a size of almost 1,000 hectares. The combination of horticulture and chemistry makes Emmen an important player in the development of sustainable plastics (green chemistry). Educational institutions, industry and government work together to realise innovations, such as the development of the world’s first biocomposite bridge.
